1972 James Earls Jones; "The Man"

When I was 15, my Father took me to see the movie, "The Man." It has stayed with me over the next 35 years and I have often asked people if they had ever seen it. I have yet to meet someone who has. Apparently it has played on tv a few times but has never gone to video/DVD.

By sheer accident, (a building collapse,) James Earl Jones is the next in line for the presidency. He assumes the office, reluctantly. The movie is powerful and thought provoking.

I have been thinking of it often with the rise of Barak Obama. His assuming of the office, should it happen, would be very different in that it would be no accident of succession.

I hope you check back in. I forgot to mention how much I love NY! I've been once, a couple of years ago. Michelle, my daughter of whom I so often write, has already been 3 times and she's only just turned 21. Actually, she turned 21 in NY on December 29th, she was there for New Year's Eve. Great city, lovely, friendly people!

Well thanks on the NY praises. It's an exhausting city. But exciting.
Where do you live?

Hoping this movie exists somewhere on vhs or something.

cheers

I am in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, due South, yes SOUTH of Detroit Michigan! I did find the city exhausting but only because there was so much to see in so little time! I find the "New Yorkers are so rude" idea so silly! Everyone, and I mean everyone, was so kind, so helpful and so nice!

I think that the move will be played on tv al lot, should Obama win! :)

Yes, i have to say that contrary to rudeness, we new yorkers are helpful. Probably because we understand how crazy and confusion life in a huge city is and how to get around.

so you are south of detroit! Reminds me of that Gordon Lightfoot song The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. I look forward to visiting Toronto someday soon.

Y'know, when i think of the movie, i picture Colin Powell more than Obama. Sort of gaining the position of president by default. Colin suddenly thrust into the presidency after Bush/Cheney are impeached along with the speaker of the house..The character is not in control of his destiny as Obama is in control, by choosing to run for office.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald plays on the radio here every November 10th. The Mariner's Church chimes their bell 29 times. It also sank on my birthday. (Though my birth year was a few years before!)The song gets stuck in my head for a month. I love that song.

I agree about Obama and even in my post said that it would be very different than the movie as it would not be an accident. I think right now, the Democratic Party is just in a mess that they need to fix quickly before they lose to a "moderate" Republican.

Toronto is a fun city. We love to go shopping there. It is the same all over the world though, you really don't appreciate what is in your own backyard do you?

Thanks for coming back again! I appreciate your thoughts. :)
